Jobs in Second Life

For a LONG time, I was wondering how someone could get a decent job in SL, especially if creating clothes, building or scripting is something you prefer leaving to others. If you want to be a hooker or a stripper, it's quite easy to find places that is looking for new employees. But if you don't want to do that kind of work, where can you find an opening for a good job?

Well, according to my own experience, know the right people, be part of as many group as you can (including subscribe-o-matics) and read SL's magazines. Oh, and try for any job offer you see that sounds interesting. Do not think "Oh no... probably more experienced people will apply". It's a probability, yes, but won't kill anyone if you try and send in your application.

When Inara (friend of mine) offered me to contact bloggers for her to promote her camping stuff, my first reaction was "Why me?" because I'm very shy and I didn't know how to get in contacts with bloggers (you can't just IM one and say "hey! could you blog about my friend's store plz? kthxbye"). I accepted anyway, find a way to contact bloggers (sorta) and I now have a job.

Later on, I got a notice from a group that was looking for live models and I decided to give it a shot since I could multitask while modeling. I applied and got the job. 'Course, I later found out that the owner was basically accepting anyone as I started to see some that couldn't adjust their hair and that, according to my friend who is now modeling there, some models now dress up as hookers. But could be a good starter job for a noob with a decent skin and prim hair.

Now, for probably the biggest mistake I've ever made in the SL job world, I didn't apply for a job I could have had a shot at. They were talking about a new job in a magazine and that the info was at page 13 or to contact the editor in chief to get the info. Page 13 had no info on the job and the rest of the mag was also lacking info. I decided to leave it there and not email the editor to at least get the info and maybe send in an application.

As you see, finding good rewarding jobs in SL is far from being easy. But if you keep looking and trying, you'll perhaps one day get your dream job.
